ICYMI, and yes we just started this piece with youth talk, there is a Yorkshire Pudding Pizza now available from the supermarket chain, Morrisons. What a time to be alive.
As you know we have reported lots of time on pizzas here at The Mouthful. They should be a food group by themselves. We have discussed the best places to eat one in Naples – and they are the best places to even the International Space Station sending up the necessary ingredients for an Italian astronaut to create his own zero gravity version.
But this latest incarnation is the quintessential food bastardisation that we can’t avoid and, one of the planned activities for our editor to eat in some random taste test in the not too distant future.
Combining your Saturday night meal with your favourite part of a Sunday roast – come on, it is – this cheesy “delight” is sure to set many an Italian gagging on their pasta when they see it on sale in the superstore.
It contains all the necessary ingredients of a pizza, a filling of tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese – just that is filled inside a massive Yorkshire pudding.
The £3 Yorkshire Pudding pizzas have been launched in 491 Morrisons stores and will be on offer until 20 February.
Jenny Dixon, Yorkshire Pudding Expert at Morrisons (a job we all want), said: “Everyone loves Yorkshire Pudding and everyone loves Pizza, so we are combining the two to create the ultimate comfort food for Yorkshire Pudding Day. The crust is made the same way as a typical Yorkshire Pudding and is topped the same way as one of our pizzas. We’re looking forward to hearing what customers think but we hope that they’ll love it!”
This isn’t the first time that there has been a mash up of different cultures and cuisines, and not the first time that the humble Yorkie has been used to house other foods.
Last year, Aldi combined a Yorkshire Pudding with a brisket – which, watch this space, isn’t as nice as it sounds and The York Roast Company made headlines for a roast dinner filled Yorkshire Pudding.
We’re keen to find out how good or bad this Yorkshire Pudding Pizza is so look out for future taste tests to discover if Morrisons have a hit or miss!
